# Sunderlal Sunderlal Bahuguna (1927-2021) was one of the great conscience-keepers of India — a Gandhian environmentalist whose entire adult life was devoted to the protection of the Himalayas. Born in Maroda village, Tehri Garhwal, he was the most visible leader of the Chipko Movement, spreading its message through a 5,000-km padyatra (foot march). His slogan — 'Ecology is the permanent economy' — distilled a profound truth. He opposed the Tehri Dam with extraordinary courage, undertaking multiple prolonged hunger fasts.
